Just minutes from CDG, Paris Disneyland is the perfect one-day layover for hard-core Disney fans. If you’ve always wanted to visit an overseas Disney park, your flight through Charles-de-Gaulle can absolutely take you there. Here’s what I learned when I did Paris Disneyland in one day from CDG airport.

Paris Disneyland is only nine minutes from CDG

Closer to its home airport than either Disney World or Anaheim’s Disneyland, Paris Disneyland is only a nine-minute train ride from Charles-de-Gaulle.

Paris Charles-de-Gaulle airport has its own vast train station, located below terminal 2. Trains depart constantly for the city of Paris, all over France, and beyond.

There are several rail options to get from CDG to Paris Disney, but the quickest is the TGV. On the route from the airport, Disneyland is the first stop, just nine minutes away.

English is widely spoken at Disneyland Paris

A quick word about a very commonly-asked question. Even if you speak no French, you will have no problem at the Paris Disney parks. All the cast members speak English, the signage is in French and English, and there are lots of English-speaking guests.

Signage at the train stations and Paris airport also include English, so you should be able to find your way around fairly easily.

Stay at an airport hotel

This plan works best if you literally stay at the CDG train station. By which I mean the airport.

If you have a layover at CDG, schedule your flights so you have a free day between them. You’ll need to spend two nights at the airport.

Why stay here instead of at Disneyland? It’s simpler, and you can get more sleep. Read on to see how this works.

I stayed at the Sheraton Paris Charles-de-Gaulle Airport Hotel. It’s located at the top of the stairs directly above the TGV train station. The hotel has a restaurant and a bar with good food, it’s remarkably quiet for being next to a runway, and you can watch the planes from your room.

TGV to Disneyland quick tips

Paris Disneyland is located in the town of Marne-la-Vallée, about 25 miles from Charles-de-Gaulle. When you look for train tickets, Marne-la-Vallée is your destination.

The TGV trains leave, and return to, CDG frequently during the day. Most of them are going much farther than Disneyland. My train was heading all the way to Marseille!

The train station at Disneyland Paris is truly just outside the park gates. You’ll have a quick walk to either the Disneyland or Studios park.

Since you’re only riding a few minutes, and getting off at the first stop, you don’t really even need to take your seat. There are jump seats right next to the doors at the end of each car. Just hang out here and hop right off at Marne-la-Vallée.

Buy your TGV tickets in advance

As you’ll see throughout this post, a day at Disneyland Paris requires plenty of advance planning. One of the first things you need to do is get your train tickets.

Charles-de-Gaulle’s TGV trains transport passengers from all over France. Which means a lot of competition for seats. If you’re looking for a specific departure, don’t wait to buy your tickets. I waited until about a month before my visit and had to alter my timeline because a couple of the trains were already sold out.

Delays are possible

Be aware that circumstances beyond your control can delay the trains. Both my morning and evening train had 20 minute delays due to some unknown factor.

When you only have a few hours at a park, every minute counts. Don’t waste it standing on the platform at the airport. So when you choose the train to get from CDG, give yourself whatever buffer works for your comfort level.

Luckily, I booked a train about 30 minutes earlier than I thought I needed.

Worst-case scenario is an unanticipated rail strike. If your train just doesn’t come, it will ruin the whole day. You could potentially salvage this situation by grabbing an Uber or taxi at the airport, but it takes a lot longer to get there, especially during a rail strike. Cross your fingers and toes that this doesn’t happen.

By the way, this is exactly why my advice is to fly out of CDG the day after your Disneyland day, not the night of. You do not want to be stuck at the Disneyland train station when you’ve got a plane to catch.

Two nights at CDG, one day at Disneyland Paris

When you schedule this out, you’ll need to spend two nights at CDG. It looks like this:

• Fly into CDG – late in the day if you have the option
• Spend the night at CDG
• Train early to Disneyland Paris
• Spend the night at CDG
• Fly out of CDG – early in the day if you have the option

Staying at CDG keeps things simple and might save you money on your flights

When you split up your flights to include a stop in Paris, it can add some additional perks besides a day at Disneyland. You may actually find that your plane tickets cost less when you don’t just fly to CDG, connect, and fly out.

When you don’t have to directly connect the flights, you’re freed up to choose different flight times and maybe even a different airline for the second leg. This can often be cheaper than just connecting on the same airline on the same day.

Staying at the airport means you wake up there for your flight out. So there’s no worries about getting there on time, no additional travel time on the day of that flight, and a generally more chill airport experience.

Paris Charles-de-Gaulle is also just an incredibly confusing airport to navigate. If you don’t have to rush to connect to a flight it will be much less stressful.

A few cautions about doing one day at Disneyland Paris

Before I jump into the actual logistics of your day at Disneyland Paris, let’s talk about why you might NOT want to do this. Plus some advice about how to best explore Disneyland Paris as a quick stop on your European vacation.

Do it at the end of your trip

First of all, if you really just have a day for the parks, don’t do it the first day you fly into Europe.

Jet lag is the real deal, and the last thing you need is an intense 10+ hour day right when you get there.

If you wait until the end of your European vacation, not only will you have the chance to get a good night’s sleep, you will also be familiar with the currency and maybe even the language.

This will be very difficult to do during the Paris 2024 Olympics

If you’ll be visiting Paris during the 2024 Olympics, you should expect big crowds at Disneyland, every day of the week. So a one-day strategy could be extra difficult. Set your expectations accordingly and be sure to buy your train tickets as far in advance as possible.

Don’t try to do any Disney destination in one day if…

Just like every Disney parks resort, Disneyland Paris is not a place you can completely experience in one day. If you’re a hard-core, frequent theme park visitor like me, you can make a pretty good run at it. With some planning, as you’ll see below. But do consider these cautions:

It’s your first day on the continent

If you’re exhausted from a long flight, plus jet-lagged, but the beginning of your trip is when you can fit it in, make the effort to stay on-site at DLP. This way you’ll be able to return to your room when you really need a break, and hopefully you can allot more than one day to explore the parks.

You’re traveling with little kids

If you’ve got a little one with you, don’t even think about seeing both Disney Paris parks in a day. The sheer distance you’ll need to walk is hard enough for grown adults. Little ones need to go at a slower pace, and so do grown-ups who are traveling with little ones! Better to make a trip of it and stay on-site for two or three nights.

You haven’t been to a Disney park since pre-2020

If it’s been awhile since you’ve been to a Disney park, this may not be the time to try to do it in a day. Things have changed a lot since the old paper FastPass days.

If you’re determined to make it work, be sure to do your homework about the Disneyland Paris app, learn about Premier Access, and brush up on your ride etiquette.

You are exhausted from the rest of your vacation

If any of the above are true for you, consider spending several nights on-site at Paris Disneyland

Touring tactics for a single day Disneyland Paris visit

Make a plan

Advance planning is crucial for any one-day theme park visit. Disneyland Paris has two theme parks, including about 50 attractions, 25 restaurants, shows, character meets, shops, and plenty of other random diversions. It’s of course impossible to do all these things in one day.

If you’re really going to see anything, you’ll need to prioritize and plan your touring. I literally made a minute-by-minute spreadsheet, but you don’t have to go that far.

Start by researching what’s in the parks, then decide if you even want to visit both of them on your day. This will dictate what type of ticket you’ll need.

Once you know where you’ll be, start looking at the lands and attractions. Make a list of your top priorities and try to estimate a time for each thing. You’ll need to figure out if you can realistically do everything in the time you have.

How to save time in line at Disneyland Paris

There are some tried-and-true theme park hacks that can help you beat the crowds at Disneyland Paris. Here are my top tips, which really helped me make the most of my day.

Rope Drop

Rope drop means being at the park gates when they open. Preferably at the front of the line.

If you’re first in the park, you can be first in line and maybe even walk on to your top priority attraction. The key to this tactic is to get to the park well before the gates open, usually at least 30 minutes early. So be sure to factor this in when you buy your train tickets.

Be aware of Disneyland Paris Extra Magic Time

Rope drop at Disneyland Paris is complicated by early entry for hotel guests. Hotel guests can get into the park an hour earlier than day visitors, which means there will be people already on the rides when you get to the gate from your train.

Even though you don’t get this magical extra hour, it still really pays to be first for the general entry. The first hours any park is open have the lowest crowd levels and the lowest ride wait times. So you can do more in less time.

Premier Access

Premier Access is Paris Disney’s paid skip-the-line system. It’s not cheap, but it can be a great way to get a ton of stuff done in just one day.

There are two Premier Access options: Ultimate and One. Premier Access Ultimate lets you skip the line once per ride on about 16 attractions. Premier Access One is a one-time skip-the-line for a specific ride.

If you’re familiar with Disney’s old FastPass system, this is the same thing except now you pay for it. Free FastPass is a thing of the past – you either buy the Premier Access or you go through the standby queue.

Ride single

A free way to avoid a long wait is to use the single rider queue. Major attractions like Ratatouille, Crush’s Coaster, and Hyperspace Mountain have single rider lines.

Riding single is just what it sounds like. You’ll be loaded onto an attraction without your group, to fill in an empty space in the ride vehicle.

Wait times for single rider can be significantly quicker than the regular standby queue. A 50 minute standby wait could be just 10 minutes riding single.

If a ride has a singles line, you’ll see the wait time displayed at the queue entry and also on the app.

Make a lunch reservation

Paris Disney has some really cool themed restaurants, and if sitting down for an hour in the middle of the day sounds good to you (it sure will when you’re there!), you should choose a restaurant and make a reservation.

You can book your Disneyland Paris dining reservation up to two months ahead. If your top choice isn’t available right away, keep trying. Reservations seem to appear randomly and odds are you’ll be able to snag a time that works for you.

My day at Paris Disney

All these tips come from my real-life experience visiting Paris Disneyland in September 2023. Here is what my day looked like.

Have a plan but be flexible

You don’t have to make a plan as detailed as this one, but it really did help me stay on track. As you can see, I actually accomplished almost everything on my list. The biggest thing that I skipped was the railroad. The waits were long and not all the stations were open.

I spent a lot of time finessing this plan. And I asked for help. If you’d like to see the process, check out this video.

Staying flexible when you’ve got a plan like this is not easy. I really wanted to do everything on the list in the order I’d planned. But mostly because of wait times I switched a few things around.

When you go for just one day, you have to be in the mindset that you won’t be able to do everything. Be realistic about how long it’s going to take to get places, and be sure to prioritize your top experiences.

For me, lunch at Walt’s Restaurant was an absolute must-do. I knew that it’s a multi-course meal and it’s in France, so I planned for 90 minutes there. This is a big chunk of the day but I really didn’t want to rush it, and the timing turned out to be perfect.

Single rider & Premier Access

What really made it possible for me to get on so many rides was riding single and using Premier Access One. When the waits were just too long, I paid the fee and skipped the line. There were only two rides I had to do this on: Crush’s Coaster and Big Thunder.

Weekdays are less crowded

Besides the fact that I was solo, and thus nimble, I went to Paris Disneyland on a Monday in September. Crowds were relatively low, which made it easier to get around and kept ride wait times down. If I’d been visiting in the summer or on a weekend, I would’ve expected to get on fewer rides.

Bring an external battery

At Disneyland Paris your phone is absolutely essential. It is your park ticket, your train ticket, and the only way to get Premier passes for the attractions. If the battery goes dead, you don’t have a train ticket to get home.

The Disneyland app uses a ton of power, and I found my battery drained 50% by lunchtime. Luckily I had a back-up power bank with me.

Even if your phone is brand-new, be prepared to top up the battery during the day. Your best bet is a small power pack like this. If you bring a charger instead, make sure it can plug into a European power outlet.

A great vacation doesn’t usually just happen, it takes planning and awareness and curiosity, a willingness to make a connection. Why Add Universal to a Disney World Vacation?

First off, in case you’re wondering if it’s worth taking some time from your Disney World vacation (or adding time on) to visit Universal Orlando, for many guests I think the answer is ‘yes’.

If you like any of these things, you’ll like Universal: Harry Potter, thrill rides, humorous rides, superheroes, Minions, the Simpsons, dinosaurs, water rides – I think you get the idea.

Universal has a bit of an edgy vibe and is a really great compliment to the parks over at Disney World.

60-Second Quick Guide to Universal Orlando

How Many Days to Visit Universal Orlando

There are two theme parks at Universal: Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida. Unlike at Disney World, these theme parks are adjacent so it’s really easy to walk between them and see both on the same day.

If you only have one day to visit Universal Orlando you can cover a lot of ground, especially if you have a Universal Express Pass. However to really see everything without being rushed, I think it’s best to have at least two days at Universal Orlando

When assessed on a cost-per-day basis, one-day tickets are much more expensive than multiple days.  And Universal often offers deals such as ‘get four days for the price of two’. So your park admission may not go up very much when you add another a day or two to your ticket. Be sure to find out what deals are on offer before you decide exactly how to split your vacation.

When to Visit Universal During Your Disney World Vacation

Once you know how many days you’d like to spend visiting Universal, you’ll have to decide when to add this into your time in Orlando. If you choose to stay on-site at a Universal hotel, I recommend adding this to the end of your trip. If you’re visiting Universal while staying at Disney World or elsewhere in Orlando you can add it in whenever you’d like.

Where You Stay Impacts Your Plan

There are three options for where to stay when you add Universal to your Disney World vacation: stay at Disney World, stay somewhere else in Orlando, or stay on-site at Universal. My recommendation is to stay on-site at Universal, but you can absolutely visit the parks if you stay at Disney World or elsewhere in Orlando.

Adding a Stay at Universal to Your Disney World Trip

If you plan to visit Universal for more than one day, I highly recommend spending the night in one of the on-site hotels. Besides spending more time in bed – since you won’t have to drive to the park in the morning – staying in an on-site Universal hotel offers many perks.

Universal Orlando hotel guests get early admission every day, including check-in day

Every guest at the Universal hotels receives early admission to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Plus several of the Universal Orlando hotels offer an additional valuable bonus: free Universal Express Passes for all guests.

Get free Express Pass for every day if you stay in the Hard Rock, Portofino Bay, or Royal Pacific Hotels

Besides early park admission, guests staying in the Hard Rock Hotel, Portofino Bay, or Royal Pacific Resort will all receive free unlimited Express Pass for the duration of their stay. This means free passes for everyone in your room all day long, including your check-in and check-out day. So if you just spend one night in one of these hotels you’ll get two days worth of Express Passes for every guest.

A very important fact when you consider adding a stay at Universal to your Disney vacation is that the early admission and Express Pass benefits apply for every day you will stay in the hotel – including your entire check-in and check-out day.

Stay One Night at Universal and Get Two Days’ Worth of Perks

If you have a hotel reservation for Thursday night, you are eligible for early admission at the Universal parks on BOTH Thursday and Friday mornings. And if you stay in an Express Pass hotel you will get Express Passes for BOTH Thursday and Friday. As soon as you check-in you will have these benefits.

So when you think about adding Universal to your Disney World trip, know that just one night at a Universal hotel gives you two days’ worth of related perks. One night in an Express Pass hotel gives you two days’ of Express Passes. Check the math and you may see that your hotel rate might be cheaper than the cost of Express Passes for your family.

If budget is a concern, adding a stay at Universal to the end of your trip can be more cost-effective than adding it to the start. Since you can arrive at your Universal hotel early in the morning, check-in, and receive the benefits, you could spend the night before in a less expensive lodging and minimize the number of nights you stay at Universal.

Visiting Universal from Disney World

Staying at Disney World when you visit Universal can have advantages. You can go to Universal in the middle of your vacation to break up your Disney days; you get to enjoy the “Disney Bubble” every night of your vacation; and, depending on where you stay, it may be cheaper to stay at a Disney World hotel than to stay at Universal.

The downside to staying at Disney World when you visit Universal Orlando is the travel time to/from Universal; you can’t take a hotel break in the middle of the day; and you don’t get the early admission and other perks that on-site hotel guests get.

Visiting Universal From Anywhere in Orlando

Many Orlando visitors choose lodging outside of Disney World or Universal property. This gives lots of flexibility around adding Universal park days into your vacation.

Travel time to the Universal parks will of course depend on where your lodging is located. Take this into account when you plan your park day. And as an off-site visitor you won’t receive the early entry perks that on-site Universal guests receive.

Beat the Crowds by Starting Early in the Morning at Universal Orlando

Especially if you don’t have a lot of time, the most efficient way to tour any theme park is to be the first one there. This is absolutely crucial if your main objective is visiting the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Be at the gate well before the park opens. If you’re not staying at Universal, make sure you take into account your travel time, including the walk from the parking garage, when you plan your day.

Guests who stay at Universal Orlando hotels get early admission to at least one of the theme parks every morning. This means that if you aren’t a Universal hotel guest, even if you are first in line for park opening, you will not be first into the early entry park.

Be sure to consult the early park admission calendar on Universal’s site when planning your day at Universal. If you are not staying on-site, start your day at whichever park does NOT offer early admission. Be there at least 30 minutes prior to the official opening time – Universal usually starts letting guests in about 15 minutes early.

If both parks have early admission when you visit, that means Universal’s expecting big crowds. Definitely consider purchasing an Express Pass to help you bypass a lot of the lines. (Note that some of the Universal hotels offer free Express Passes to their guests, which can make a stay at these hotels very cost-effective – see my notes above).

Getting to Universal from Disney World or elsewhere in Orlando

Disney World is located about 15 miles from Universal Orlando. Depending on traffic and where on Disney property you stay, you should expect about a 30-60 minute drive between Universal and your Disney World hotel.

If you have a car, be sure to add enough time to park and get to the Universal gate. It is a bit of a trek from the parking garage, about 15 minutes’ walk depending on the space you get.

If you don’t have a car, you can get to Universal via taxi or Uber/Lyft. First thing in the morning it may take a few minutes for your ride to arrive and collect you at your hotel, so be sure to account for this when you set your morning alarm.

A taxi or Uber will drop you off at the Universal Orlando parking garage so expect a 15 minute walk to the park gate from there.

Keeping this blog has made me more conscious of what makes a good vacation and how travel affects our everyday lives. For most of us it’s novelty that makes travel so compelling. It takes us out of our everyday routine and offers the chance to take risks and try new things.

Travel Offers the Chance to Practice Trying Something New

Some of my most courageous accomplishments this year took place in theme parks. Thanks to my daughter, I found the guts to ride the Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit at Universal Studios Florida, and Disney World’s Tower of Terror. For years I had avoided these rides.

But once I had conquered the first ride, I knew I could handle a lot more than I had given myself credit for. Many times I’ve thought back to the feeling of being strapped into that roller coaster and the exhilaration of overcoming my fear. Taking risks takes practice – practice that presents itself in a million ways when we travel.

Any vacation can offer a chance to practice being brave. Whether it’s a roller coaster, a ride on a zip line, or discovering the ocean through a snorkeling mask, these experiences shape our everyday lives and change us for the better.

Informing and Inspiring Your Next Adventure

It is a pleasure and privilege sharing my experiences with you, and I hope they inspire you to try something courageous and bring that bravery into your life. Thanks for joining me on this journey.

On our recent trip to Disneyland we got caught in an epic day-long rainstorm that was so bad the park closed early. Here on goinformed.net I’ve already shared a couple of posts with tips for dealing with challenging weather at Disney World and Universal Orlando, and now I have a few more tips for what to do when the rain goes beyond just a typical afternoon shower. These rainy day tips will help make your day at Disney or Universal a whole lot easier.

Wet Shoes

Whether it’s a day-long storm or just a sudden torrential downpour, it’s easy to end up with soaking wet shoes. Here are some of my tips for how to deal with wet shoes at Disney.

My shoes are soaked but I don’t want to leave the park

Go to the nearest shop and buy some new socks. Get two small plastic bags from the cashier. (Disney cast members will always give you bags even if you don’t buy anything).

Pick up some napkins at a counter-service restaurant or get some paper towels from the restroom.

Find a dry place where you can discreetly strip down to bare feet. (I recommend the back corner of a quick-serve restaurant; or you can use a restroom – bonus if it has a hand-dryer that can double as a foot-dryer).

Get your feet as dry as possible, then switch into your new, warm, dry socks. Then put your feet into the plastic bags.

Slip your plastic-encased feet into your shoes and carry on. This really does work and even though you’ll probably still feel the water in your shoes it won’t actually be touching your skin.

(Carefully) Use a Hair Dryer to Dry Out Wet Shoes

Soaking-wet shoes can take a long time to dry out, and if you don’t have another pair of shoes you may need to speed up the process. You can use a hair dryer to blow warm air into and around your shoes to help them dry more quickly.

First take the insoles out of the shoes, set them aside. Put the hair dryer on the highest fan setting possible, but watch the heat. If the air is too hot it might warp or melt your shoe, so don’t put a hot hair dryer right up against the shoe. Instead, blow warm air or hold the heat away from the shoe surface, and check the progress frequently to be sure you aren’t causing hot spots.

Blow the air both into the shoe and around the outside. A more powerful hair dryer will be more effective than a tiny wall-mounted hotel-room dryer. If there’s only one of these puny dryers in your room, check with the front desk to see if they have anything more powerful. They may have a standard hair dryer you can borrow.

I found the hair dryer to be less effective on the insole, at least on our shoes, but the insoles dried on their own overnight. I hung them in the shower from the clips on a slacks hanger.

You probably won’t be able to fully dry your shoes with a hair dryer, but even if you just get them less soggy this will greatly speed up the time it takes them to air dry.

Preparing for Wet Shoes

In the morning if your shoes are still wet, or if you know you will be facing another very rainy day, start your day with plastic bags on your feet (first socks on your feet, then plastic bags, like above).

Bring an extra pair of dry socks with you so you can change if you need to.

More rainy day tips for extreme weather

Pack an extra pair of shoes and lots of socks

One of the best ways to keep your feet dry is to have two pairs of shoes on your trip. This way you can rotate, allowing one pair to dry while you get the other one wet.

And don’t forget to bring lots of extra socks so you can at least switch to dry socks frequently.

Wipe ponchos down with a towel

When you get back to your hotel room, use a towel to dry your ponchos. You’ll find that you can get them almost completely dry this way, but if you don’t wipe them off they really stay wet. Towel them down, then find a place to hang them until you need them again.

Carrying a towel in your backpack can really help too, so you can wipe down when you go inside a ride or into a restaurant.

Live to see another day

If the deluge hits on your last day at Disney, by all means, keep going and make the best of it. But if you still have days left in your trip, consider heading back to your room a little (or a lot) early. Touring in extreme weather is physically and mentally exhausting.

Take advantage of the light crowds on a rainy day and hit the rides you most want to see. Then call it a day before everyone in your group melts down.

Our go-to rescue plan on a stormy day is room service. It’s sensational to get back to the room, enjoy a long hot shower, and not go back out. If room service isn’t your style, pick up a bite on your way to your room or order pizza. Put on your pajamas and rest so you can be fresh the next morning.

Order supplies

If you suddenly realize you did not pack properly for the weather conditions, check with your hotel to find out if you can receive an Amazon  delivery. You can order almost anything you need, even that extra pair of shoes you forgot, or a shoe/boot dryer, without spending precious vacation time at the mall.  Spring for next-day shipping (this is an excellent time to try out a Prime membership) and get on with your magical day.

Recently, while in the U.K., I had the opportunity to stay at a few really great hostels. I was a little anxious about this at first, as I had never stayed in one before, but I was pleasantly surprised!

Local Charm and Comfort

Going in, I had a few misconceptions about my choice of lodgings, such as: they are dirty, not well maintained and have a very sterile environment. All of these proved to be false.

While I can’t account for all hostels, the ones I stayed in were very clean, well-cared for, and in fact were better than some hotels I’ve stayed in! All were very comfortable and homey with their own unique charm.

How Hostels Keep Your Belongings Safe

I was also under the impression that they would be unsafe, and my personal belongings would surely be stolen. Wrong.

Each traveler gets a locker for their valuables such as laptops, iPhones, etc.

TIP: Remember to bring a lock, they aren’t always provided.

There also seems to be an unwritten code among hostel guests, “You don’t touch what isn’t yours”. I never had a sense that I wasn’t safe or that I had to worry about any strange-looking people lurking about the hallways. (I’m sure I looked strange enough in my socks and sandals…a story for another time).

Can You Find Privacy in a Hostel?

Lastly, I thought about privacy. I mean, come on, how private can these places possibly be? Well that depends on how much privacy you really need. There were quiet areas where you could go relax with a book or look over the pictures you had taken that day, and there were common areas, where everyone gathered and chatted with friends or made new friends.

Sleeping in a Hostel

The dorms or sleeping areas, were just that, sleeping areas. Nobody partied or stayed up chatting. When it was time for the lights to go out, they went out and people settled in and went to sleep. Now and then you would see the glow of someone’s phone, but once tucked into your bunk it was quiet and comfortable.

Speaking of quiet, if you are a light sleeper, bring earplugs. If you know you snore, be courteous and try nose strips that help alleviate snoring. In one place I stayed, a guest talked in his sleep and scared me half to death. It wasn’t just talking, it was shouting. Once I realized what was happening, I put my earbuds in, turned on some soothing music and slept like a baby.

What About the Bathrooms in a Hostel?

Shared bathrooms were another of my concerns. And by shared I mean boys and girls using the same one. I had to quickly get over my prudish American mentality and suck it up…I was indeed going to have to share a bathroom. Fortunately all had full, locking doors. No one can come barging in on you while doing your thing.

The showers were also shared but private. It was sort of like camping, but indoors. I did catch a glimpse of a young man walking down the hall in a pair of flip flops and tight jockey shorts, but it didn’t bother him, so why should it bother me? And honestly, why should it bother me? We’re all made the same, we’re all human beings.

Save Loads of Money When You Stay in a Hostel

All-in-all hostels aren’t for everyone. If you’re traveling with young kids, probably not for you. But if you’re by yourself or a small group, they are an economical way to travel to places that can be costly to visit.

The most expensive place I stayed was $23.00 per night! I mean come on…that’s crazy cheap.

Also, not every hostel I stayed in was as fabulous as the ones pictured here, but they were all clean, centrally located and run by very friendly and knowledgeable staff. All offered free coffee and tea. Some offered a continental breakfast for $1.50, and all offered full kitchens where you could cook your own meals.

So if you’re planning a trip abroad and having a hard time budgeting the big three – airfare, hotel and food – seriously consider a hostel.

Resources for Planning a Hostel Stay

Do some research, there are many great sites online to help narrow down the choices. www.hostelworld.com is great and is also a booking engine. Trip Advisor is also a really good resource.

However you decide to go…always know before you go…and just travel.

Driving to the dive site on Bonaire one morning, I spotted a rare phenomenon along the road. It looked like a farmer harvesting a field of sparkly snow. The machine was a cross between a bulldozer and a snowplow, and the crop was glimmering white.

Where a shallow pink pond lay just days before, the plow was scooping up pristine salt from the exposed sea floor and loading it into a never-ending parade of huge dump trucks. After the dive I grabbed my camera and hastened back to the action. This is something you’ve really got to see to believe.

Bonaire Sea Salt Harvest

The southern end of the island of Bonaire is dedicated to solar sea salt production. Water is pumped into shallow ponds and allowed to evaporate, leaving a dry layer of salt. The ponds are home to many birds, including pink flamingos.

That’s not snow

As the ponds dry, an undulating border of what looks like bubble bath forms. These bubbles are sticky and salty, and they look a lot like snow that’s been plowed to the side of the road.

Near the pier where ships carry the salt away, huge piles of salt rise beside the road. Even though the weather is very hot and dry, I cannot stop thinking these are mountains of snow.

The salt piles are snowy white and twinkle in the sun like ice. I’ve always wondered how the salt ends up in those piles. Lucky for me (and you), I got to witness the salt harvest first-hand.

Just 20 minutes from the town of Kralendijk, Bonaire’s Hang Out Beach Bar offers the quintessential Caribbean feet-in-the-sand, beer-in-your-hand experience. Sited against the warm, gentle waters of Lac Bay, this true beach bar is built right on the sand, with a castaway vibe that perfectly reflects desert island living.

Lac Bay, Windsurfer’s Paradise

The Hang Out Beach Bar is part of Jibe City, home-base for windsurfers who come from around the world to sail in Lac Bay. Even Disney couldn’t create a more perfect spot for windsurfing. Not only does a steady wind blow into the bay all day long, but the water is like a bathtub – 82 degrees and only around knee-deep with a soft sandy bottom.

The conditions in the bay make Jibe City a great place to try out windsurfing, even if you’ve never been on a board before. Rentals and lessons are offered all day long, usually with no advance appointment needed. Or just wade out and watch the sails go by.

Jibe City also has a great little surf shop, if you want to pick up a souvenir or need basics like sunglasses or sunscreen.

The Hang Out Beach Bar

The bar is just what you’d picture – slightly ramshackle, with few walls and lots of sand. The Dutch staff at Hang Out Beach Bar speaks excellent English, and probably Spanish and Portuguese too. (Bonaire gets lots of South American tourists. Most restaurant workers seem to be able to switch between languages with no hesitation).

Amstel Bright, brewed on Curacao, is the house beer, just order a “Bright”. Or try another local favorite, Polar, from neighboring Venezuela. It’s pronounced pole-arr. We suggest ordering your beer in an ice-filled bucket.

Another house-favorite at Hang Out Beach Bar is the sangria. So refreshing on a hot day (and what day isn’t hot on Bonaire?). Your sangria will arrive in a big beer pitcher with a very big straw. I do recommend sharing, but you’re on vacation so that’s up to you.

Food at Hang Out Beach Bar

On most days, the bar is open during the day until around sunset. The menu features sandwiches, salads, and always a delicious burger of the day.

On Thursday nights, the bar stays open for a very special dinner event. It’s called the Table BBQ and it is not to be missed.

Cook Your Own Dinner at Hang Out Beach Bar Table BBQ

At the Table BBQ, each table receives a hibachi-style charcoal grill hot and ready to go. An all-you-care-to-eat meal, the Table BBQ includes steak, ribs, hamburgers, and fish, for you to grill at your table. Salad, rolls, and baked potatoes complete the dinner.

We have enjoyed the Table BBQ several times, and have found the quality to be consistently good. The ribs are especially delicious, and the fish is fresh – usually it’s fabulous fresh tuna. Everything is served family-style, meaning a big plate of meat arrives and everybody can cook whatever they want. It is also truly all-you-can-eat, servers will keep offering food until you ask them to stop.

And did I mention the price? The Table BBQ is just $27.50 for adults, $15 for kids (up to 14).

If You Go To Hang Out Beach Bar Table BBQ

The Table BBQ is only on Thursday nights, it’s best to make a reservation. Also, be aware the BBQ can be canceled if the weather gets too windy. The open grills tend to throw sparks around in the wind – an issue even on relatively calm evenings – so I’d advise you to seat your toddler at the upwind end of the table. The upside of the grill in the breeze: the smoke seems to keep mosquitoes away.

And bring your appetite, there is a lot of good food!

Home to the world’s most iconic theme parks, Orlando Florida is also notorious for its extreme weather. Especially during the summer months, visitors to Orlando are likely to encounter very hot, humid weather and thunderstorms on a daily basis. Savvy travelers should have no problem coping with the heat and rain. Here are a few tips to prepare you for the hot weather at Universal Orlando.

Bring a poncho

Hot weather in Orlando equals afternoon thunderstorms, including torrential downpours. The good news is that these rain storms often only last a few minutes. The bad news is that you can get completely drenched just running from one attraction to the next. Be prepared and bring a poncho.

A few poncho tips:

Purchase Ahead and Buy in Bulk – Bring 2 ponchos for everyone in your group. This way you can have one drying in the hotel room and keep a fresh one in reserve. You can buy ponchos in multiples on Amazon for a lot less than you’ll pay in the park.

Get Ponchos That Come In Their Own Bag – and get some carabiners to attach them to the outside of your purse or backpack. This way you don’t have to put a wet poncho in your bag.

Carry a Small Towel – You can use it to wipe off your wet poncho when you go inside, or to wipe down the seat on the Jurassic Park ride.

Pay It Forward – If you don’t want to pack the ponchos back in your luggage for the trip home, give them to some arriving guests who don’t have any.

We like the Totes ponchos. They’re durable, have snaps up the side, and come in a mesh pouch.

Get out of the heat or rain in the middle of the day

Be at the park when the gates open in the morning – it’s the coolest time of day with the lowest crowds. Then take a break around lunchtime to get cool. I have a couple of suggestions about this.

If you’re in the parks, my recommended drop-in lunch spot is Circus McGurkus Café in Suess Landing at Islands of Adventure. This isn’t my favorite because of the food – it’s pretty much the standard mediocre Universal quick-service – but this is a big restaurant with fun Dr. Suess theming, it’s almost always nearly empty, and it’s nice and cool.

Or avoid the hot weather at Universal by escaping the parks at lunchtime

Mid-day is the least efficient time to be touring in the parks. The lines are the longest, it’s hot, and you’re probably a little tired and hungry. I think this is a great time to take a break and recharge. Head out of the parks for lunch, either over to CityWalk or even better, go to your hotel for a few hours. (You did stay onsite like I suggested in my 33 Things to Know Before You Visit Universal Orlando post, right?)

The Universal hotels have some fabulous restaurant options. We really like Kitchen at the Hard Rock (awesome burgers) or you can go over to Portofino Bay for pizza. Or get something to go and take it to your room – you can take your shoes off and rest in the nice cool air conditioning!

Stay in your room awhile, take a look at your favorite weather app to find out when the afternoon rain shower is coming. You may want to stay inside just a bit longer to avoid that shower or get back to the park so you can be happily on a ride when the rain hits. (An indoor ride that is!)

Catch a Ride on a Pedicab

Save your feet, get there faster, and catch a cool breeze when heading to or from the onsite hotels – for just a few dollars you can catch a ride on a pedicab. The pedicabs are usually waiting just outside of security on the paths to the hotels. They are almost always there from lunchtime through to the evening.

A pedicab ride is easily twice as fast as walking which saves you time, and, most importantly, your tired feet! The pedicabs don’t charge a set rate – the driver asks that you pay whatever you’d like. For two of us we usually pay about $6-$7, but if it’s really hot I’ll pay a little more.

Pedicabs are not always waiting at the hotels, so you may have to walk in that direction. But you could get lucky if someone recently was dropped off there and the rider is making a return trip with an empty cab.

Get a Wand Holster

I bet you’ve never seen this tip before. But wizarding robes are way too hot for summer weather at Universal. And you surely want to keep your wand handy to cast spells in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley. The obvious solution: a wand holster.

You can either make your own wand holster or purchase one on Etsy. Luna’s holster in the photo here was purchased from Earsom Emporium  on Etsy and we love it. Which turnstile to pick when you’re first at the gate at Universal Orlando

If you’re like us and you want to be first at the Universal park gate, this obscure geek tip is for you. One time we were literally the first people at the park gates. We chose a turnstile at random, first in line. But when it was time for the gates to open, there was no park employee to take our ticket!

When you arrive earlier than the park employees you’ve got to guess which turnstiles will be manned. If the weather’s going to be warm, take a look above the turnstiles. We have noticed that the park workers jockey to stand at the turnstiles that have fans directly overhead. They also seem to prefer working on the end. I can’t guarantee you’ll have someone there to take your ticket but this will definitely increase your chances.
